Areas Where You Should Avoid Going Cheap on Your Home

Everyone deserves to be comfortable in their own home. While most of the time that means finding a home that we can be comfortable in or turn into something that will be comfortable for us, that just amounts to making the best of your situation. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but if you really want a home that is perfect for you, having a home custom built for you is absolutely the way to go. There are a lot of big decisions that go into having a custom home built, one of which is where you want to prioritize spending your money. Not all parts of your home are created equal, and there are some that you want to avoid cutting corners and going cheap on.

The Living Room

Where do you spend most of your time at home when you aren’t eating or sleeping? Where do you entertain guests? There’s a pretty good chance that the answer to both of those questions is the living room. If you want to be comfortable and really enjoy the space in this room, you need to avoid the temptation to cut costs here. Large windows are more costly, but they offer an unparalleled view of the outdoors, not to mention all the wonderful natural light they let in. Exposure to natural light offers multiple personal benefits, not to mention the fact that it means that you’ll need to use artificial lighting less, thereby reducing the need to spend money on illuminating your living room.

Flooring

How much thought do you give to what you’re walking on every day? If you’re like most people, it’s probably not much. That’s one mistake you don’t want to make when designing your custom home though. Think about it. You’re constantly walking on the floor in your home, your furniture is resting on it, and it sees use all day every day. You don’t want to have to do repairs and replacements for your flooring on a regular basis, so it’s important to make sure that you buy quality flooring. What that means specifically will change from person to person. Choosing your flooring should be based on how durable you need it to be, whether or not you have kids or pets, the cleaning and maintenance requirements compared to what you’re willing to do, and your preferences in regards to its appearance.

Storage Space

Everyone has belongings that they aren’t using all the time. Sure, you can always downsize your belongings, but things like your wardrobe, dishes, books, seasonal decorations, and other items all need somewhere to belong when you aren’t using them. Storage space is another must if you want to have a home that feels comfortable instead of cluttered. Remember, living with a ton of clutter can be detrimental to your health, even if that clutter is useful. You owe it to yourself to have a place for everything and to keep everything in its place. That may mean shelling out some extra cash for storage closets or other forms of built-in storage that you can put to good use once you’ve moved in.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is sometimes referred to as being the heart of the home. Many bonding experiences have been had while cooking a delicious dish and then sharing it with others. That’s a lot easier to do if you have a kitchen that’s conducive to a quality cooking experience, which is why a custom kitchen is the way to go. It’s more expensive, sure, but it’s actually an investment. A custom kitchen adds value to your home that can’t be achieved with stock features. This can make it a really smart move if you end up selling your home sometime in the future. Plus, having a kitchen that’s designed specifically for you will pay you back again and again in terms of being easy to work in and around.

Bathrooms

Like your kitchen, your bathroom is another area of your home that warrants some extra spending. Some of the most private things we do as humans are done in the bathroom. It only makes sense to do what you can to make sure that the room is a comfortable, relaxing space. Few things can rival the luxury of lounging in a bath in a beautifully designed, comfortable bathroom. The cost of your bathroom shouldn’t just be devoted to beauty and comfort, however. It should also be focused on practicality in regards to the materials you choose to include. By nature, bathrooms tend to be relatively wet parts of the home. Water can wreak havoc on materials such as wood and carpet, so those should not be heavily featured in your bathroom. Tile, marble, and granite, however, either already are, or can be treated to be nonporous, making them far more suitable for use in the bathroom.

Lighting

We mentioned previously that natural lighting can be incredibly beneficial. Unless your schedule is governed by the rise and fall of the sun, however, you’re going to need lighting in every room in your house, to say nothing of rooms like bathrooms and laundry rooms that may not have windows in the first place. Humans are pretty visual creatures, which means lighting is an absolute must. It’s more than just a matter of utility though. Lighting can be one of the more beautiful features in your home and can be a great way to add character to it, so don’t feel like you need to stick with the cheapest lighting options out there. Improving your lighting can add a level of comfort that you wouldn’t experience otherwise.

If you want to end up with a wonderfully comfortable custom home, you need to know where to prioritize spending your money. Ultimately, the best places to spend your money will depend on your specific needs and circumstances. Think about where you’ll spend the most time and what you need to be comfortable. Let that guide you as you decide how to best spend your money when building your new custom home.
